There are so many examples of government control squeezing down on the citizens. In Canada during the G20 talks, police engaged in “pre-crime” activities a la the film, Minority Report. Citizens were arrested before they even did anything on the suspicion that they would cause a disruption at the event. The same thing happens in the UK, and I’m sure it has happened here in the US, it just has not gotten reported yet.
In agriculture, genetically modified crops are forced upon farmers, or else they face lawsuits (from Monsanto, Supreme Justice Clarence Thomas worked for the huge corporation prior to becoming a SCOTUS judge) for growing them “illegally”, due to cross-pollination they do not want from nearby crops. I, for one, do not want genetically modified corn, wheat, or even hay for the animals in the food chain. Neither do many farmers. But economically, they have been pressured into growing them, or else losing everything they have.
Meanwhile, NAIS and other regulations have set the stage for ever more clamp down and control over agriculture. In certain states, the HSUS has been given authority to seize animals for “abuse”. But the so-called abuse they have found has been standard practice for centuries of animal husbandry. This is your food chain, people. The government has seized unreasonable control over this very basic need of the citizens, not only in the USA, but the world. I don’t want animals abused. I deplore feed lot growing. But these HSUS (and other empowered animal rights groups) zealots are “finding” tiny infractions and then seizing the farmer’s whole herd, having been given the authority to do so by state governments.
In a recent case in Colorado, it was done without a warrant, even. Colorado has passed a law giving tipsters $2,000 if the animals are seized. So you fight with your neighbor, then he/she waits until the one and only day of your life you ever left water bowls unfilled to tip off the animal rights zealots who have been given power to decide if you have abused your animals. They get rewarded and your future is ruined. At the time of the event, the owner was advised that if she wanted to fight the action, she would have to pay thousands of dollars per day for the government to “hold” them for the trial. The farmer signed them over, because of that.
These are but a few of the actions taking place. There are new ones every single day. A teenager, sent to jail for years for stealing just a few cents. A man severely beaten for riding his bicycle at night without a headlight. A man intending to prove via scientific testing that vitamins were effective treatment for many illnesses having his laboritory invaded by the FDA, arrested, all his equipment seized and even his supplier arrested. Vitamins. There was nothing but vitamins there, and nothing else. There are so many examples of this type of abuse.
But in my opinion, the most dangerous precedent was right here in my own state of Indiana. A recent ruling by our Supreme court tramped all over the 4th amendment right to due process. In a domestic abuse case, the police illegally entered a couple’s residence after the woman had called for help. When police arrived, she would not give permission to enter (her abusive husband was refusing them the right to enter and she would not give permission). I sympathize with the police’s intent in this case, but they entered without a warrant nevertheless. I used to work with abused women, so I know their frustration when the woman will not accept the help that is right at hand. But I was not prepared for the far-reaching consequences of this action.
In a singularly stunning decision, the Supreme court of Indiana ruled that the entry without a warrant was acceptable and that the details of the search could be sorted out later in court. This is a horrible precedent, because it allows the authorities the right to invade your home with no permission either from yourself or a judge and go on a “fishing expedition” finding “violations of the law” that they would never have known anything about any other way. It violates a basic premise of the law going all the way back to the Magna Carta. Furthermore, it limits justice to those who can afford to persue it in court. Taking the risk that judges such as this won’t rule against them.
An innocent mistake you say? In the name of protection of abuse victims? Just wait until the police arrive at your door and “find” a small pack of marijuana that they planted. Or perhaps a surprise inspection of your financial records in which they “find” you didn’t report the $20 your neighbor insisted you take for mowing her lawn when she was gone? In either case, you could and probably would face arrest, fines and even jail time. This is all possible and given the climate of shrinking rights in the US, probable, if this decision is allowed to stand. An innocent, unintended consequence you say? In the face of all the other loss of rights that are happening with ever accelerating speed, not only in the US, but all over Western civilization? One can only speculate. But these rights were put in place by our country’s founders for very good reason. Abuses pertaining to them had occurred for centuries before the people were protected by them. Will you stand by and watch these protections being thrown out? On your watch?
The justice, Steven David, (I refuse to use the title, “Honorable”, as this decision proves he is anything but) who wrote this egregious decision was appointed by the governor, and in Indiana he will not become a permanent judge until he is confirmed by the voters in the next general election. My fear is that by the time the election gets here voters, who usually pay little attention to the election of judges, will forget all about this and confirm him.
I have joined a group to distribute this information at the polling places. I hope he is not confirmed, but it is a huge “IF”. My opinion is that should he be confirmed, all justices everywhere will be emboldened to remove the rights of ordinary citizens everywhere -more and more, as is already happening.
This is your country, people. There are evil entities in this world who don’t want you to have ANY rights. But they only operate in the shadows because we are too busy with sports and entertainment to pay attention to what they are doing. A glaring example of this is: the president moved his speech about jobs creation so that it would not conflict with the season opener of the NFL Come on, now. The one thing in the world that should be more important to every American than the NFL or any other entertainment SHOULD be jobs. If anything the NFL should have delayed the start of the games. And yet most people thought this was an appropriate thing to do. Unbelievable.
Wake up! 1984 was a bit late, but it is arriving. Help us beat it back NOW. Please. If not for yourself, then for your children’s futures.
