It is easier to build monuments than to make a better world

In light of the horrible Chinese statue that was put up to “honor” Martin Luther King, I want to share this powerful poem by a young man who was only in his twenties when Martin was assassinated, Carl Wendell Hines.

Now that he is safely dead
Let us praise him
build monuments to his glory
sing hosannas to his name.
Dead men make such convenient heroes:
They cannot rise to challenge the images
we would fashion from their lives.
And besides, it is easier to build monuments than
to make a better world.

We must let Hines speak to us as we try to overcome the fear and cynicism that says there is no such thing as a better world. For King is related to all who are called upon to help create the twenty-first century.

Government gone wild

There are so many examples of government control squeezing down on the citizens. In Canada during the G20 talks, police engaged in “pre-crime” activities a la the film, Minority Report. Citizens were arrested before they even did anything on the suspicion that they would cause a disruption at the event. The same thing happens in the UK, and I’m sure it has happened here in the US, it just has not gotten reported yet.

I highly recommend Dr. Stanley Monteith’s videos. Many are available on You Tube, even more are available on his web site, Radio Liberty (link at right). Dr. Monteith is a Christian and a retired orthopedic surgeon. He has studied the illogical acts of our US and world leaders for over 25 years now and he has tied it all together for believers.

I recommend the “Best Illiminati” series on You Tube as a springboard into Dr. Monteith’s message. In 15 parts, it will give you a broad overview of forces at work in the world. His other works delve into each of these subjects more extensively.

I suggest you copy the title of the series to your clipboard. You Tube will not lead you right to each segment in succession. If you copy the title, at the end of each segment, you can paste it into the You Tube search and merely change the first number, 2/15: 3/15 etc.

Dr. Monteith’s website will lead you to his 4 hour/day radio broadcast which keeps things current. He also offers a library of books you will not find anywhere else, including the Secret Nazi Plan and the Brotherhood of Darkness, world domination 101 for beginners.

Be sure to listen to his video. It is better than anything else you will find.

Supreme Court’s Stunning reversal of campaign finance laws

Just as I was celebrating the apparent delay of Obama’s insurance & pharmaceutical company welfare plan .. more commonly known as “healthcare plan”, the Supreme court delivered a crushing blow to the lower and middle class.

In a case that really had little to do with the underlying philosophy of corporate campaign finance*, it removed the restriction on the campaign contributions of large companies (corporations) to political entities, candidates and their party organizations. This is perhaps the most serious attach on the middle class yet.

Grassroots organizations will not be able to compete with these types of contributions for the hearts and minds of their “representatives”. In fact the result of this horrible ruling is that the representatives will not be representatives of anyone except the very rich who control these campaign donations. The “people” will be the very last ones considered. The people do have the option of joining forces to counteract these huge companies, however they are split in their world views – seemingly irreconcilably.

One might envision a large religious organization gathering enough money from members to affect a few of these elections. Perhaps labor unions (which are highly dubious in terms of leadership themselves)) doing so. But the rest of us are well divided and conquered.

Unless the people wise up and ignore TV ads and television pundits, this law might well be the final straw that breaks Democracy’s back in the US. It is irresponsible for the court to have done it, in my view. While I am not happy with way the social agenda is advanced by the Democrats, I have never seen this much of a sweeping power grab from them. The public should be outraged by it. I urge people to educate themselves about this crucial matter, it is time to stop being divided and come together on the things we CAN agree upon.

When I supported the nominations of the 2 Bush nominations to the court, I had no idea this type of abuse of power would ever occur. (And no, I don’t think they “stole the election” for Bush in 2000. The recount was as dirty as the original election had been and they were right to stop it.)

*The case involved the airing of “Hillary, the Movie” right before the primary elections. The case was not about IF corporate funding should be allowed, but whether the entity that produced the film and wanted to distribute it fell under the restriction or not.

UPDATE: Since I wrote this, a group has formed to try and get this overturned. It will be hard, as it will require an amendment to the constitution. This should never have been necessary, but alas, it is now due to the irresponsible decision by the high court. Please join the effort now. Obama bought and paid for in Health care reform

Consider this exerpt from Bill Moyers, Sunday Aug 30. Obama is breaking every single campaign promise. All he is doing is enriching the insurance companies and the pharmaceutical companies. Quality of health care isn’t being considered now, and it certainly won’t be under any new plan. The only improvement in a sea of schemes to enrich insurance companies was the public option, and it is now off the table. Around the world, the only types of plans that work are those that phase commercial interests COMPLETELY OUT OF HEALTH CARE, and yet, Obama has already capitulated to them and not only makes no move to cut them out, but is further empowering them, at the expense of poor people who cannot afford them. (But will soon be forced to pay for anyway). Time to stand up, people. Tell your congressment the insurance companies are rich enough, don’t hand them ever escalating profits while quality of care continues to decline.

Quote: “no matter what specifics emerge in the voluminous bill Congress may send to President Obama this fall, the insurance industry will emerge more profitable.”

And remember that television ad Barack Obama made as a candidate for president?

BARACK OBAMA: The pharmaceutical industry wrote into the prescription drug plan that Medicare could not negotiate with drug companies. And you know what, the chairman of the committee who pushed the law through went to work for the pharmaceutical industry making $2 million a year. Imagine that. That’s an example of the same old game-playing in Washington. I don’t want to learn how to play the game better. I want to put an end to the game-playing.

BILL MOYERS: Now look at this recent story in the LOS ANGELES TIMES. Lo and behold, since the election, the pharmaceutical industry’s $2 million dollars a year superstar lobbyist Billy Tauzin has morphed into President Obama’s pal. Tauzin says the President has promised not to pressure the drug companies to negotiate with the government for lower drug prices and has agreed not to allow cheaper drugs to be imported from Canada or Europe – contrary to the position taken by candidate Obama…

Each of these stories illuminates the scarlet thread that runs through Maggie Mahar’s book – the story of how today’s market-driven medical system gives Wall Street investors life and death control over our health care, turning medicine into a profit machine instead of a social service to meet human need. That’s the conflict at the heart of next month’s showdown in Washington.
